Does God Care About My Crush?

Hello lovelies,

I was thinking about something the other day and couldn’t help but laugh. I remember having my first ever crush on a guy. His name? “Boy in blue Shorts.”

Yeah, obviously that wasn’t his real name. Truthfully, I don’t actually know what his real name was! I just remember seeing him from across the church and instantly falling in love. It didn’t matter that I was just a kid at the time; my heart was swooning for this boy who always wore denim shorts to my father’s church every Wednesday evening. We never talked or looked at each other. I just crushed on him contentedly from afar.

Fast forward to today, while our crushes might no longer wear blue shorts, I know the feelings haven't changed much, have they? Whether it's the guy in your young adults' ministry, a colleague at work, or a friend who just posted a photo that made your heart skip a beat, carrying a crush as a woman of faith can feel like an emotional rollercoaster. You replay conversations in your mind, overanalyse every single text, and wonder: Is he the one God has for me? Or am I just wasting my heart's capacity on a fantasy?

I’m writing to you today to remind you how to navigate those feelings while keeping your heart anchored in God. Having a crush isn't a sin! God created us with the capacity for romantic attraction and desire. Wanting a godly partner is a beautiful thing. The mistake we so often make is hiding those feelings out of shame, rather than simply bringing them straight to God in prayer.

The reason my "Boy in blue Shorts" crush was so easy to hold onto was because I knew nothing about him. I filled in all the blanks with my own imagination. When we crush on someone from afar, it’s so easy to fall in love with an ideal version of them rather than who they truly are. Pray for the clarity to see people as they are, not just as you hope they'll be.

Most importantly, let's make sure this crush doesn't become an idol. When someone takes up more space in your thoughts and morning quiet time than God does, it's time to pause and take a breath. Remember Proverbs 4:23: "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Guarding your heart doesn't mean building a wall; it just means placing God at the door so He remains your primary source of peace and security.

If your mind feels consumed by someone right now,

  1. Pray for him as a brother in Christ, focus on his spiritual journey, not just what he can give you emotionally.

  2. Give God permission to close the door and ask Him to remove the affection if it isn't part of His plan for you.

  3. Keep living your purpose;s don't put your life, career, or growth on pause while waiting around for a relationship.

Whether this guy turns out to be your future husband or just a passing season of affection, your heart is completely safe in God’s hands. He isn't withholding good things from you. Stop stressing over every small interaction and surrender those butterflies to the Lord. Trust that the story He is writing for your life will far exceed any daydream you could construct on your own.

With love and prayers,
